Vintage Yakumo-nuri Lacquerware Ikebana Vase | "Floating" Grape Leaves 8"H

Sale price$24.00

Discover the subtle and mysterious beauty of Yakumo-nuri, a traditional craft from Matsue, Japan. This vintage vase is designed in a graceful te-oke (traditional water pail) shape, perfect for ikebana flower arrangements or as a standalone art object.

The magic of this piece lies in its unique lacquer technique. A vibrant design of autumn-colored grape leaves was first painted in colored urushi lacquer, then sealed under a coat of semi-transparent black lacquer. Over the decades, the top layer has gained clarity, allowing the motif below to "float" to the surface with a deep, dream-like 3D effect. The fiery red and golden leaves emerge beautifully from the deep black background.

【A Blend of Tradition and Modernity】 This piece is a fascinating example of "modern lacquerware," where ancient techniques meet mid-century materials. The body is crafted from a durable synthetic resin, making the vase remarkably lightweight, water-resistant, and resilient for everyday enjoyment. The surface, however, is finished with genuine, hand-applied urushi lacquer, preserving the soul of the traditional craft.

This is a testament to the innovation of Showa-era artisans adapting their heritage for the modern world.
