Vintage Tonala Mexico Pottery Musician Violin Figure Folk Art Barro Brunido 9"
This is a rare and highly captivating vintage Mexican folk art pottery figurine from Tonala, Jalisco, crafted in the traditional Barro Bruñido (burnished clay) technique.
While Tonala pottery is famous for animal figures like owls and cats, human figural pieces—especially of musicians playing instruments—are much harder to find and highly collectible. The piece is entirely hand-painted with incredible detail, featuring the iconic Petatillo (fine cross-hatched line work) as a background texture, stylized ferns, and large Tonala flowers in beautiful earthy tones of terracotta, slate grey, muted blue, and cream. Instead of a glassy liquid glaze, it features the characteristic satiny sheen achieved by meticulously polishing the clay with a pyrite stone before firing, giving it an authentic, soulful presence.
