Vintage Ocumicho Mexican Folk Art Pottery Sun Face Coin Bank Surreal Head

Sale price$120.00

This is an exceptionally rare, museum-grade vintage terracotta face-shaped coin bank (alcancía), crafted in Ocumicho, Michoacán, Mexico, during the highly coveted 1960s to early 1970s era. Ocumicho pottery is world-renowned for its peculiar, macabre, and psychedelic outsider art, famously rooted in the visionary style of Marcelino Vicente.
This exact model shares an identical, highly unique pedestal-stand structure and facial rendering with the legendary "Sun God" piece featured in notable archival folk art literature (such as Collectors Weekly) from the early Don Lewis collection. It features a stunning, anthropomorphic "Sun" (Sol) motif framed by a mane of hand-applied green sun rays or spiked petals. The back of the head is finished in a bright orange with a vertical coin slot, resting on a yellow pedestal base. Far transcending standard tourist pottery, this is a raw, powerful work of authentic Latin American folk art with immense historical significance for serious connoisseurs.

Condition Report
Heavy Vintage Condition with Significant Wear, Losses, and Historical Repairs.
This item is a genuine mid-century relic and shows heavy signs of age and rustic handling, which is typical for these primitive clay pieces. The yellow pedestal base has visible cracks and old repair marks. Several of the green sunburst pieces around the face have old glued repairs, and a few of the lower green pieces are missing entirely. The bottom of the base is open.
(Note: Depending on lighting conditions and screen displays, the natural flesh/beige tone of the face may appear slightly pinkish in some photos. The actual item features a traditional, rustic earthenware skin tone.)
In the realm of primitive folk art, these imperfections and rustic old repairs do not diminish its worth; rather, they provide an irreplaceable vintage patina, validating its historical survival and enhancing its raw, compelling outsider-art authenticity. Please review all high-resolution photos carefully before purchasing.
