Vintage Hiromichi Saito Tsuchiyu Kokeshi Doll Circa 1970s Prime Era Signed 9.5"

Sale price$100.00

This is a museum-quality vintage Tsuchiyu-style Kokeshi doll by the master artisan Hiromichi Saito (1932-), likely crafted during his prime era in the late 1960s to early 1970s.

  • Artistry: Features the iconic "Janome" (bullseye) crown and a dynamic "Nijimi" (bleeding red) motif on the body—a signature style of Hiromichi influenced by the Nakanosawa lineage. The brushwork is incredibly confident and sharp.

  • Historical Significance: Based on the fluid, cursive style of the signature and the rich, honey-colored patina of the wood, this piece represents the artist at the height of his career (his 40s). It is a superb example of post-war Japanese folk craft.

Size and Weight

  • Height: Approx. 9.5"

  • Diameter: Approx. 2.25"

  • Weight: 6.7 oz.

Material

  • Natural Wood: Beautifully aged over 50 years to a deep, golden amber tone.

Condition

  • Excellent Vintage Condition: Despite its age, the contrast between the black ink and the vivid red pigment remains exceptionally clear.

  • Traditional Structure: The head is rotatable due to the traditional "Hamekomi" (inserted neck) technique. A slight, natural wobble is a characteristic feature of this authentic construction, not a defect.

  • Details: Very well-preserved with only minor surface wear consistent with age. No cracks or major damage.
