Vintage Chinese Bamboo Root Carving Dragon Water Dropper Vessel Ink Well 1950s

Sale price$135.00

Item Description
This is a rare and magnificent mid-century (circa 1950s-1960s) Chinese bamboo root carving vessel, masterfully hand-crafted in the shape of a traditional water bucket.
Unlike standard open-top brush pots, this unique vintage piece features a closed top with a single centered hole measuring approximately 0.75 inches. This specific design functions as a traditional Water Dropper (Shuidi) or Ink Well / Water Coupe used in Chinese calligraphy to carefully pour water onto an inkstone. Water is filled through the top center hole and dispensed through the tiny spout hole located near the handle attachment.
The artisan has beautifully utilized the organic shape and rich grain of the bamboo root to carve a dynamic imperial dragon chasing a sacred pearl in deep, high relief. Having developed a gorgeous, rich honey-brown patina over the decades, this item is an exceptional addition to any scholar's object collection or oriental vintage display.
