Rare Antique Chinoiserie Bamboo Table | Hand-Painted Lacquer Panels, c.1900
This is a rare and highly refined antique chinoiserie bamboo table, originally produced circa 1880-1900, clearly distinguished from later 1950s revival pieces.
The construction, materials, and surface treatment all point to an authentic late 19th-early 20th century origin rather than a mid-century reproduction.
The table features a tortoiseshell-style bamboo frame, created by traditional heat-treatment and staining techniques that produce the characteristic mottled pattern seen throughout the legs and stretchers.
The top and lower shelf panels are finished in a deep black lacquer-like ground and hand-painted with birds and bamboo in red and gold, framed by intricate gilt borders influenced by Japonisme and Chinoiserie aesthetics popular in Europe during the late Victorian and Belle Époque periods.
Structural details further support the early date: hand-cut wooden panels, aged patinated fasteners, irregular tool marks, and traditional joinery methods consistent with furniture made before widespread industrial standardization. The reverse and underside surfaces retain their original, unrefined textures, reinforcing the authenticity of the piece.
Unlike the more common mid-20th-century bamboo tables—often fitted with woven rattan shelves—this example uses painted wooden panels, placing it firmly within a higher-end decorative tradition aimed at the European market at the turn of the century.
Overall, this is an exceptional and scarce example of early chinoiserie bamboo furniture, notable for its craftsmanship, hand-painted decoration, and strong historical character.
Measurements:
Overall: approx. 18.5" x 18.5" x 28"H
Lower shelf: approx. 12" x 12", about 10" from floor
Weight: approx. 7.6 lb
