Papua New Guinea Yam Mask Abelam Baba Woven Fiber Vintage Tribal Art Sepik 14"
This is an authentic vintage hand-woven fiber Yam Mask (known as a "Baba" mask), traditionally crafted by the Abelam people of the Sepik River region in Papua New Guinea. Unlike masks made for humans, these unique pieces were created to dress and decorate sacred giant yams during harvest festivals to honor ancestral spirits.
It features an impressive, organic multi-tiered woven structure colored with traditional natural earth pigments (ochre, white, and charcoal). The side profile showcases a beautiful, dynamic three-dimensional curvature, while the back reveals the meticulous spiral weaving technique. A perfect, distinctive piece for collectors of Oceanic ethnographic art or as an exotic wall decor statement.
