About the Maker Founded in 1859 on the Danish island of Bornholm—an island renowned for its pottery—the L. Hjorth workshop established an international reputation for its high-quality stoneware. Design and Artistry This jar dates to the Art Deco period of the 1920s-1940s, a time of great creative output for the workshop. The body is adorned with a masterfully executed sgraffito design depicting stylized birds nestled amongst foliage. The lid and shoulder feature bold, repeating geometric patterns, a hallmark of the Art Deco style that provides a sophisticated contrast to the organic motifs below. It is the trace of where two separately thrown sections of the pot were masterfully joined, or a mark left by a shaping tool used by the potter.
