L. Hjorth Danish Art Deco Lidded Jar with Bird Motif, c. 1930s

Sale price$260.00

We are pleased to present an exceptional and rare lidded jar by L. Hjorth, one of Denmark's most celebrated ceramic workshops, from the golden age of Scandinavian design. This piece is a superb example of early 20th-century Danish Arts & Crafts.

About the Maker Founded in 1859 on the Danish island of Bornholm—an island renowned for its pottery—the L. Hjorth workshop established an international reputation for its high-quality stoneware. Works from Hjorth are held in the collections of major Danish museums and are highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

Design and Artistry This jar dates to the Art Deco period of the 1920s-1940s, a time of great creative output for the workshop. The body is adorned with a masterfully executed sgraffito design depicting stylized birds nestled amongst foliage. The lid and shoulder feature bold, repeating geometric patterns, a hallmark of the Art Deco style that provides a sophisticated contrast to the organic motifs below. The vessel is finished in a sophisticated matte glaze with a rich palette of earth tones—browns, ochre, and muted blue-greens—for which the Hjorth pottery is famous. It is a stunning fusion of modernist form and masterful, warm craftsmanship.

Condition and Marks This piece is in excellent vintage condition, with no apparent chips, cracks, or repairs. It has been preserved with remarkable care. The base is clearly stamped with the authenticating marks of the maker: the iconic L. Hjorth deer logo, the "L. Hjorth" signature, "Bornholm" (the place of origin), and what is believed to be the model number, "2.1".

A Note on Craftsmanship: A very subtle, fine horizontal line can be observed encircling the body of the jar. When lit from an angle, this line reveals a slight, almost imperceptible change in the surface plane. This is not damage, but rather a hallmark of the traditional, hand-thrown manufacturing process. It is the trace of where two separately thrown sections of the pot were masterfully joined, or a mark left by a shaping tool used by the potter. This feature is a testament to the piece's authentic, handmade origin and adds to the unique character and warmth of the artwork."
