About Title "Small Falcon Hunting, Kamakura Period" (鎌倉期 小鷹狩)
"Kotakagari" refers to the practice of hunting with a small hawk attached to one's arm. During this activity, nobles would wear a specific type of clothing known as "kariginu(狩衣)," which was designed for ease of movement. The kariginu was particularly suitable for hunting because of its comfortable fit and flexibility. In the late Heian period(平安期), there were distinctions between the clothing worn for different types of hawking. For small hawk hunting (known as "kotakagari"), nobles would wear autumn-colored kariginu, while for large hawk hunting, they would wear a different outfit called "mizuboshi" along with suminohakama pants. The kariginu had unique patterns and features that set it apart from regular clothing.
