Hakata Urasaki Dolls – Elderly Couple Figurine (c.1950–55)
A beautifully crafted vintage
Hakata Urasaki Dolls
figurine featuring an elderly Japanese couple seated on a tatami mat—an iconic postwar depiction of harmony, wisdom, and family tradition.
This piece is part of the
early export line (c.1950-55)
produced by the Urasaki workshop in Hakata, Japan. The original
red-and-silver "Hakata Urasaki Dolls - Japan" export sticker
remains intact on the underside, confirming authenticity and early production.
Hand-made from plaster/chalkware and finished with detailed hand-painting, the sculpture captures expressive faces, fine wrinkles, layered kimono folds, and a tender domestic moment—him reading, her sewing. Early Urasaki export pieces of this size and quality are increasingly uncommon, especially with the original tatami-style base .
