Antique India Wooden Panel Pair Lintel Carved Teak Temple Vishnu Wall Decor 2pc
■ Product Description Antique Indian Hand-Carved Wooden Lintel Panels - Matching Pair (Architectural Salvage) This is a magnificent, highly collectible pair of authentic antique Indian hand-carved solid hardwood architectural lintel panels (darwaza headers) dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. Sourced from a traditional heritage home (Haveli) or village temple, these panels are masterfully deep-carved from dense, high-quality tropical hardwood (likely old teak) with an incredible 3-inch depth, creating a stunning 3D high-relief visual effect. Selling them as a matching historical pair, these panels formed the tiered inner and outer layers of a grand entrance doorway, designed to bestow divine protection and prosperity upon the household. The iconography on both panels is highly complex, masterfully carved, and centers around the Vaishnavism tradition.
1. Top Panel: The Divine Court of Lord Vishnu
-
Center: Lord Vishnu sits majestically under an ornate architectural temple canopy, riding his sacred avian mount, Garuda. He holds his traditional attributes, the Chakra (discus) and Shankha (conch shell) in his upper hands. The canopy roof is flanked by two beautifully carved peacocks.
-
Bottom Center: Three under-niche figures of Ganas (playful dwarf attendants) are carved in a classic atlantes pose, humorously "holding up" the divine platform.
-
Left & Right Flanks: Features a pair of exquisite Kinnaris (mythical celestial musicians, half-woman and half-bird) strumming stringed instruments (Veena) to bless the assembly.
-
Surrounding Figures: Intricately detailed celestial attendees, Dikpalas (Guardians of the Directions) including a deity riding on a human's shoulders (Nara-vahana), deities in prayer position (Anjali Mudra), and a procession of warriors with animal mounts.
2. Bottom Panel: Lord Vishnu & Consorts
-
Center: Features a four-armed male deity, likely Lord Vishnu (or a specific South Indian manifestation such as Lord Venkateswara), seated within a decorated archway (Prabhavali). He holds traditional attributes in his upper hands.
-
Flanking Attendants: Flanking the deity are two seated female consorts holding lotus buds, and two standing female attendants raising royal Chauri (sacred fly-whisks) towards the God as a symbol of reverence and purification.
-
Left & Right Flanks: Guarded by beautifully sculpted Hansa (sacred mythical swans) clutching natural foliage/pearl vines in their beaks, with magnificent scrolling tails.

■ Condition & Provenance
-
Genuine Architectural Antique: Shows wonderful signs of authentic age, weathered texture, and an oxidized dark wood patina from decades of actual placement.
-
Wear & Tears: Minor chips, edge losses, and age-related natural wood grain splits/fissures are present, particularly along the borders and high points of the carvings. These imperfections are expected in authentic salvage pieces and only enhance its rustic historical charm. (Please review all high-resolution photos carefully).
-
Authentic Local Inventory Markings on Back: The backside features large, handwritten Devanagari numerals (reading "२६५" / 265 or 26y) painted directly onto the wood. When traditional Havelis or temples were dismantled, local artisans and dealers wrote these lot numbers to keep architectural components organized. This is definitive proof that this is a genuine architectural salvage piece, highly sought after by core ethnic antique buyers.
-
Vintage Label & Historical Deciphering: It also retains a highly valuable original paper tag, providing a fascinating glimpse into its mid-20th-century import history:
-
"MADE IN INDIA": An old, faded purple ink export stamp.
-
"Ex RP No. 576" (or similar): An old dealer's handwritten registry or catalog inventory number.
-
"C&F $15.00": Indicates the vintage "Cost and Freight" import value or customs valuation at the time.
-
"$35.00": The final retail price from decades ago (with the original $15.00 crossed out in green marker). Considering inflation, $35 was a substantial amount at the time, indicating it was sold in a high-end vintage gallery or auction house.
