Condition Report (Full Disclosure)
This piece is in gorgeous, authentic antique condition with a deeply weathered, rich original patina. It displays "honest wear" accumulated over more than a century of functional use, which strongly confirms its true age and historical value.
  • Overall Wood & Surface: Displays natural age-related scuffs, scratches, dings, and minor hairline cracks consistent with age.
  • Lid (Top Planks): The lid displays natural age-related hairline cracks and a slight upward warping/bowing along the side edges. This is a classic, expected characteristic of antique solid teak wood that has slowly dried and moved over a century, proving its genuine antiquity.
  • Edges & Bottom: Shows beautiful, heavy wear on the bottom planks from being moved across floors over generations. A minor, natural wood chip/loss is present along the lower rear edge.
  • Brass Hardware: The ornate brass plates feature some authentic bending, warping, and slight lifting due to the natural contraction of the wood underneath.
  • Interior & Side Till: Natural gaps are visible between the bottom interior planks due to the centuries-long shrinkage process of the old wood. The lid of the internal side till is currently stuck very tight due to natural wood expansion and old wax/varnish buildup. It has been left untouched to preserve the wood fibers from splitting.
  • Restoration/Maintenance Notes: As typical with heavily used functional antiques, this piece has been cared for over the generations. The flathead screws securing the long iron strap hinges inside the lid are later 20th-century period replacements used during historic maintenance to keep the trunk functional. Additionally, while the ornate brass escutcheon (keyhole plate) remains beautifully intact on the front, the internal locking mechanism has been historically removed from the interior for practical use by previous owners.
