This carving seems to represent the elegant lifestyle of the imperial family, as Tai Chi was reportedly taught only to royalty at that time. The box is painted in deep red lacquer, a traditional color symbolizing luck and joy in Chinese culture. Most likely, this chest was detached from its pedestal and stored, which is why it doesn't come with a base."
